2013 Short Term Car Leasing Trends

The car industry has undergone some major changes in the millennium and in recent years financing methods have become more flexible in order to stimulate demand. In business, leasing offers great benefits – off balance sheet, offsetting against taxable benefits and a tangible conclusion to the contract period.

We have found that short term car leasing in business is also another great benefit, particularly for organisations that are growing their field sales / account management teams. By focusing on this need we have become experienced, short term car lease specialists looking to raise the awareness of this financing methods within the consumer market.

The Mercedes C250 CDI Sport gets the pole position however it is interesting that the 2nd, 3rd and 4th most popular models are small 3 door cars, showing the trend of car buying by fuel economy / CO2 emissions.

By vehicle group

The average short term car lease was 7 months, for an average £346 per month. No surprises on vehicle type - vehicle group G (Executive Saloon e.g. Audi Q3 2.0 TDI) has been the most popular this year, followed by vehicle group C (medium 5 door) that has the benefit of lower emissions at an average 160g/km.

By monthly cost

As the bar graph below shows, £251-£300 per month is the most popular monthly cost bracket for short term car leasing. In financing terms this has always been a very popular price point.

The emerging popularity seems to be on less 'sales rep' type vehicles of monthly costs between £300-£400 per month. This shows the trend of short term car leasing moving to more lifestyle, consumer orientated audience.

Cars on Demand have found that search engines are an immensely popular way for people to begin their search for a short term car lease. We offer long term car rental as a core product and with some up to date Google UK trends statistics have found that this is now a growth area in web searching – see below:

Summary

Higher specification vehicles are becoming popular in this specialist area of leasing, as are small, city cars with the key consumer benefits of fuel economy and lower road tax. Combine this with the average monthly cost of £346 and we can see lots of diversity in the flexible car leasing market – the stereotype of entry level rep cars cannot be seen in this analysis. It is our view that affordable, flexible car acquisition methods will continue to be popular in this and future years – we hope to continue to spread the word about the great benefits of short term car leasing.
